Qatar airways and Amex Lounge

Gemma May 03, 2017 Europe, Restaurant Visits Leave a Comment

Within 48 hrs, my partner and I experienced quite a few meal types for the beginning of our holiday.

Experience 1: The Amex Lounge at Sydney Airport.

I highly recommend becoming a member of either Amex or Qantas and getting access to these lounges before your flight. (It just makes the whole process more bareable).

We artived at the airport far too early, so once checked it, we headed straight for the Amex Lounge. We we had a full buffet available to us, plus and sandwich bar and a host of drinks and desserts. We were able to comfortable relax before our flight and avoid injuring our backs by being stuck in the chairs at the gate.

In the lounge, I opted for the Vietnamese chicken, steamed rice and veggies, some cheese and crackers and a choc cookie. This also came with a nice glass of wine for myself and a beer or 2 for my partner.

End results: Highly recommended

Experience 2: Dinner on the plane – Qatar Airways.

I have had the “less-than awesome pleasure” of having quite a few inflight meals over the past few years and Qatar leaves the rest for dust. It it by no means restaurant quality – it still tastes of airline, but the quality is there. Your stomach actually thanks you for eating something, rather than hating you and sending you running to the rest rooms. The dinner we had was chicken, roast vegetables and steams saffron rice. It was not half bad. Yes, there is always the awkwardness of eating off a small tray and trying not to bump your neighbours, but the food was actually quite good. Also, Qatar use metal cutlery so that you can cut the food, as opposed to just wishing it was cut with the plastic cutlery the other airlines hand out.

Experience 3: Breakfast on the planes x 2 – Qatar Airways

Owing to the Timezone change, we ended up having 2 breakfasts (1 on the way from SYD to Doha, and 1 from Doha to Berlin). Honestly, the breakfast options were not great. You had 1 decent option that most would be happy with, and then you had 2 crappy options that most would not touch with a 10 foot pole. My partner and I were lucky enough to be sitting at the front of the plane, so we were served quite early and did not miss out on the 1 acceptable meal. It was cheese omelette with chicken sausage and fried Tomato. It was delicious. Just what we needed at the time.
